Since the Carter administration all conversations to, or about, Taiwan’s went through China. Trump has broke that nearly 40 year old rule in a 10 minute conversation. In response China teared up and said its going to take it’s (trade) baseball and go home.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters in Beijing that:
There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China. This is a fact that is generally recognized by the international community.
I think Trump’s long game is to start decent among various parties. Why would the president-elect do something so nefarious? Simple, Trump wants to break a bunch of our trade deals with China. What a better way to break up the deals and give the US (needed?) leverage then to plant the seeds of revolt in one of leading international competitor.
Trump did the same maneuver with the Republican candidates by playing all the leaders against each other with just a few statements. He did the same thing by getting issues like the Bill Clinton’s rape allegations onto CNN by announcing it at random rallies. CNN has been ignoring the allegation for decades but Trump made CNN react.
Here Trump just made a phone call. Trump didn’t say hardly anything. But China’s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang had to make a hard line statement. However China never thought of what that looked like to their people. It makes China look like they’re afraid Taiwan is going to secede tomorrow.
This is a master manipulation but its at global level. If there one misstep we’re looking complete Chinese revolution and a global economic collapse. There are no state or federal laws to fall back on if he goofs up. This is a move that should have waited until after his first 100 days. At least by then his full team would be in place.
