Long-Range Shooting with Ballistic App In the Good Ol’ Summertime

Quick Tip from Ballistic App - Choosing Your Caliber
Long-Range Shooting with Ballistic App In the Good Ol’ Summertime

U.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)- The vacations, blue skies, and warmer temperatures of summer mean … more time on the range, shooting! And there are many, many opportunities during the summer months to hone your shooting skills and test those skills against your fellow shooters. All the while using state-of-the-art Ballistic, of course, to make every shot count!

The Big Daddy of long-range shooting competition is the Precision Rifle Series or PRS. Now in its 7th year, PRS features Open, Product, and Tactical Divisions. The 2018 PRS matches began in February, but they really gain steam in April and beyond, with numerous matches held during the warmer months at venues across the country.

PRS also launched the new Gas Gun Series last year, with competitors using AR-style rifles. These matches offer many of the same long-range challenges of the more traditional PRS competitions, but with a faster time clock.

Many PRS-related events are popping up around the nation, too, like the 2018 Absolute Zero Sniper Match Season (ambushactionseries.com.) Hosted by Frontline Defense, a firearms training center in Warrenton, North Carolina, the Absolute Sniper Challenge consists of individual and team events held several times over the Summer of 2018. Shots are taken out to 1,000 yards, and most of the summer matches count towards the PRS Club Series Matches for the Southeast Region.

Of course, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) host long-standing shooting competitions year ’round, but especially during the summer. The NRA’s High-Power Rifle Competitions (http://competitions.nra.org) are held at numerous shooting ranges across the country and attract some of the country’s top competitive shooters.

The CMP’s Talladega Marksmanship Park (thecmp.org/competitions/matches/) is home to scores of different shooting competitions. Boasting the latest technological advances, this 500-acre facility is open all year, to the public, and attracts shooters of all ages and experience levels. Located just two miles from Alabama’s renowned Talladega Superspeedway, the facility features a 600-yard rifle range with targets at 200-, 300- and 600-yards.

When practicing for or competing in these events, remember: next to his or her rifle, a long-range shooter’s best friend is Ballistic, the top-selling ballistics calculator that goes everywhere a shooter goes.

German ‘Asylum Fraud’ Scandal Probe Widens to Include 10 More Migration Offices

German migration authorities have widened their probe into asylum application fraud and are now investigating 10 additional field offices on suspicion of granting refugees permissions to stay in the country without proper grounds.

On Friday, the German Federal Office for Migration and Asylum (BAMF) announced that it would review some 18,000 refugee cases in the city of Bremen going back as far as 2000, after the regional office discovered the approval of up to 2,000 asylum stays between 2013 and 2016, which did not match the government’s sanctuary criteria.

On Sunday, the scandal deepened with 10 more asylum decision offices added to the investigation list. BAMF announced that it will examine those branches where the average quotas of asylum applications accepted or rejected in comparison with other offices deviated by 10 percentage points or more, a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior said, following a request from the DPA news agency. A total of an additional 8,500 cases from 2017 would be reviewed, she added.

In addition, BAMF will review a complaint from a Rhineland-Palatinate Bingenan office employee, who on February 6 asked the Nuremberg headquarters to evaluate “divergent assessments of asylum procedure” at the office.

The new development follows a scandal in April, when it was revealed that a former BAMF official at the Bremen office was under investigation on suspicion of taking bribes from at least 1,200 asylum seekers between 2013 and 2016. Five other officials at the workplace are now also being probed for possibly taking part in the scheme. They include an interpreter and three lawyers. Amid the corruption scandal, the Supreme Audit Institution was tasked by Interior Minister Horst Seehofe on Thursday to probe the BAMF and the Interior Ministry.

In the meantime, BAMF denied claims that the government had been aware of the asylum fraud as early as February 2017. Suddeutsche Zeitung and the NDR reported on Sunday that, back then, authorities received emails asking the migration authorities to look at the Bremen branch, including a refugee lawyer who worked for the Lower Saxony office.

More than 1.6 million refugees, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, have arrived in Germany since 2014, due to the so-called ‘open door’ policy of Chancellor Angela Merkel. The influx of migrants has divided the country and significantly boosted support for the anti-migrant Alternative for Germany (AfD), which secured third place in September’s elections and entered parliament for the first time. The rise of the far-right in Germany came after a number of terrorist attacks involving refugees, as well as sexual harassment incidents across the country.

In October of last year, Merkel’s CDU and its Bavarian CSU sister party eventually agreed to cap Germany’s intake of asylum seekers at 200,000 a year. Over the next two years, Germany plans to spend €78 billion on migration-related issues, Der Spiegel magazine reported on Saturday, citing the Finance Ministry’s document.

The freaky deaky “Google Duplex” demo

Before you read on, watch the demonstration and ask yourself: Did Google just pass the Turing test? There’s so much humanity in a well-placed “ummm.”

Booking a dinner reservation isn’t what Turing had in mind but if this is a failing grade it’s at least a high failing grade. With a few years of refinement, a D- is in sight. Within 10-20 years, they’ll ace it. Fifty years from now, the population of Japan will be down to six guys and they’ll all be on the phone 24/7 with their AI girlfriends having the liveliest, most charming conversations.

Consider this your latest reminder that very soon you won’t be able to trust anything you see or hear. People are already having ethics freakouts over the Duplex technology:

There are “woke” takes too, of course. Just as every new life in creation instantly becomes a host for bacteria, so too every new cultural development of note instantly attracts virtue-signaling about how the underprivileged are destined to be cheated or oppressed by it:

It seems pretty clear who will be at the receiving end of those phone calls. It won’t be other “busy” people. It will be the restaurant hosts, the hair stylists, the receptionists, and others whose (often low-paid) job it is to field calls from clients. It is doubtful that Google Duplex will be used to set up meetings with people who are important to you—you’d want to do that yourself, right?

Duplex shields those who reside high up on the hill from those down below. It relieves them of the awkwardness of having to talk to someone of lower socioeconomic standing. The functionality will likely be very popular for that reason, but it is important to understand the extra burden put on those at the receiving end: They will spend their day trying to figure out whether the entity at the other end of the line is human. (One possible benefit: At least Duplex is unlikely to be a jerk to a service worker.)

Said one indignant futurologist, “I would feel offended if someone considers their time so much more valuable than mine that they think it is acceptable to demand minutes of my time to deal with a transaction they’ve delegated to a server farm, and any existing relationship would be greatly damaged.” It makes me laugh to think of people watching the clip above and imagining a future where jobs like “receptionist” still exist, with human beings forced to conduct petty phone transactions with algorithms all day long. As Google improves AI and makes it cheap and ubiquitous, voice transactions will quickly become inefficient and archaic. You’ll just tell Duplex what you want, the AI will communicate silently with the AI of the business you’re transacting with, and the reservation will be booked. Nothing that doesn’t absolutely require human interaction will be done, or need to be done, by voice.

What we’re really watching here, I assume, is the germ of AI companions. Booking a reservation is a test to see if a human being can be led to believe it’s conversing with another human being, even in a simple chat with a specific purpose. From here it’s a matter of building that out. The logical endpoint of Duplex isn’t to talk to customer service, it’s to talk to you. You’ve seen this movie! Google might as well sign Scarlett Johansson for the rights to her voice now and get cracking.

Here’s Google’s post describing the challenges they had to overcome to get something natural-sounding. I do think they’re going to come under pressure to eliminate the gratuitous tricks designed to fool people, like peppering the speech with “um,” and maybe to build a rule into it requiring Duplex to admit that it’s AI if asked. That could defeat the purpose, of course: Some human beings might hang up on a robot rather than proceed. But since, for now, this is an application for businesses, that risk seems small. What restaurateur is going to hang up on someone who’s trying to book dinner just because their Google gizmo is doing it for them? They’d be throwing money away. Besides, things won’t get *really* weird until they figure out how to make the AI super-charming. Imagine chatting with a flirty customer who has you laughing and then it suddenly occurs to you, “Wait — are you a robot?” And the flirty response comes: “Do you want me to be?”
